“Faith makes us sure of what we hope for and gives us proof of what we cannot see.”
Hebrews 11:1 (Contemporary English Version)
There are very few assurances in the world. In fact, we are repeatedly told that taxes and death are the only things we can be sure of. Scripture assures me that there is something better than either of those options to which I can look forward.
Even death is not formidable, given what I heard at two funerals this past week. The quality of the selfless lives that were testified to told me that there are numerous Christians quietly acting out the gospel good news every day. To these saints, there has always been the hope that their faithfulness would result in changed lives. I am confident that they are being eternally rewarded for their efforts.
What I have seen repeatedly in life, and am sure that we can count on, is attempts to accommodate the personal preferences of the world. The ethics of the gospel have been legislated into neutrality wherever someone felt their rights were being hindered. What encourages me is the continued selflessness of those who act out the gospel commands, “for it is God’s will that by doing right you should silence the ignorance of the foolish. (I Peter 2:15)”
I do not need any further proof of the Kingdom of God, for I have glimpsed it in the lives of the saints. Faith is the only assurance I need.
Pastor Duane
